TERMS & FAQ

There is no set answer of how long it takes to learn an instrument. This varies from student to student and really depends on the individual, how much practicing you do and your age. Playing is a physical skill so it does take repetition to improve. With regular practice a basic level of playing can be accomplished within a few months. Most of my students take lessons on a long term basis because they want to be constantly improving and they find the lessons enjoyable.
-
You will require to own a suitable instrument to. begin your lessons. Please contact me in case you need help in choosing and purchasing one.
-
My recommended age guideline depend on the physical capability of a student. Starting an instrument too soon where a child may not be able to achieve a comfortable hold or play with good posture can be counter-productive. Anyone between 6 yrs to 80 yrs is pretty suitable for the lessons.
-
In one month you really don’t have enough time to give your lessons a fair chance. It takes time to translate what you are learning into a physical skill. Much like going to the gym, it takes time to see results. However, I don’t insist on semester minimums for lessons. Every student here is on a month to month basis. To discontinue lessons, all you need to do is to inform before the 15th of your last month.
-
Yes, we have an open door policy. It is your choice when to sit in. However, please keep in mind that while some students work better with a parent in the room, others may find it distracting. The teacher will give you some advice on this after they get to know your child. This is only applicable for offline lessons which I don’t offer unless you live very close to my location.
-
Yes. In the beginning the forty five minutes gives the student a lot to practice at home. You could mentally cope with a longer lesson, but playing an instrument also involves a physical skill. To get the physical side down takes spaced repetition. In the prescribed time, you will get enough material to be able to learn well and develop proper technique. As you progress, and with my, you can go to a longer lesson time.
-
I recommend a minimum of 15 minutes per day, six day’s per week. Although this is the absolute minimum recommendation, students will progress faster and remember more if they are able to practice more often. Short practice sessions done several times per day, every day, works out much better than longer practice sessions a few times per week. For young children, the practicing goes much better if the parent supervises.
-
Lessons missed due to activity conflicts will be made up by scheduling another lesson in the week (either by switching with another student, or rescheduling)
Lessons missed due to time conflicts may also be made up through adding extra time to a regular lesson.
When you sign up for Private Music Lessons, you are securing a specific time slot in an instructor’s schedule. The music teacher is working for you during that time slot whether the student is able to make their lesson in-person or not.
Any other make-up lesson days are scheduled at the instructor’s discretion. Exceptions will only be made if the child has missed more than 3 consecutive lessons due to a medical emergency backed up by a doctor note.
-
In the unlikely event that I miss any session, I will either reschedule or refund your lesson payment. Amake-up lesson will be allotted during the flex for any days that are missed.
-
Every student has access to the same number of lessons (8 for 4 weeks, twice weekly) no matter what day they are scheduled on. The monthly cost is a lump sum spread across 8 lessons in 4 weeks.
There is a slight flexibility for me to schedule make-up lessons due to illness or non availability based on proper excuses, at my discretion.
-
The student showcase is held at the end of their lesson package usually at the end of the year
Exposure to music festivals and other calendar events based on the process and talent of the students.
Parents will be informed and invited to each of these performances.
-
The reason I do a monthly cost is to help track the many moving parts that come with running a separate program for each student based on their skill levels.
-
No.
When you sign up, you are securing a time slot in an instructor’s schedule. You must go through my cancellation policy if you wish to quit.
-
Progressive Academy reserves the right to cancel any student’s lesson on recommendation of their instructor with a seven-day notice. The student’s remaining lessons will not be charged to the account.
Parents may cancel lessons for their child. They must give a 30-day notice to stop the payments starting the day Reinette is informed via an email to reinette@progressiveacademy.ca. Students may continue lessons during this 30-day notice, or they may forfeit the lessons at the choice of the parent. This is in addition to the $75 cancellation fee.
There are no exceptions to the cancellation policy.
-
Under no circumstances are there refunds offered for lessons that have already been taught.
There are no refunds offered for lessons missed due to sickness or holidays taken during regular school hours. There are no make-up lessons offered for these reasons as the instructor is still working with otherwise schedules that could have been taken up.
There are only refunds offered if the student has missed more than 3 consecutive lessons due to a medical emergency backed up by a doctor note.
-
Payments are processed monthly. The monthly payments will begin at the beginning of each set of lessons (8 lessons per 4 weeks)
